Oh my goodness. This was the PERFECT prequel to The Guardian. At last, we get an entire story (albeit short enough to read in an afternoon) solely in Jack O’Connell’s point of view. EEEEEP! Of course, I loved every second of it. 🥰 His character shone through so deliciously strong and clear. There’s so much angst in this story, from grief over the loss of parents to the (ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE) realization of his love for Felicia “Felix” Taylor. Through it all, he’s flawed and deeply conflicted, but chooses to surrender his dreams and hopes to the Lord, bringing to life a beautiful, powerful theme that deeply resonated with me.
The romance was the perfect mix of angst and sweetness for me (really, best-friends-to-lovers is one of the sweetest tropes out there). And I was dying with amusement at the way his brothers ruthlessly confronted him about it. Poor Jack. 🤣 Augh, soo cute. Anyway, I appreciated how the subject of being equally yoked was tackled in a Biblical manner, and how Jack stayed true to the Lord’s will about that even when he was so in love with her. sobs Such a noble guy, despite all his flaws. ❤
On top of that, it’s written beautifully, with an authentic Western feel (especially in the dialogue!). And the pacing is wonderful, especially considering its length! It never felt either rushed or too slow to me.
Overall, I loved this SO MUCH, and recommend this to anyone who wants their day to be brightened by a sweet, faith-filled Western romance that leaves room for hope. 😉 It will not disappoint!
